Wear layer: how many millimetres do you need?

2, 3 or 6 mm decides how many times a floor can be sanded and how long it lasts. The simple rule for not overpaying — or underbuying.

On an engineered board, one figure matters more than all the others: the thickness of the noble timber on top. It decides how many times the floor can be renovated, and therefore how long it will last. Here is how to read it.

What exactly is measured

The wear layer is the top layer of real hardwood, bonded onto the substrate. It is the only part you ever see, sand or refinish. Everything below is structure.

Careful with wording: some sellers quote total board thickness — 14 mm, 15 mm — which tells you nothing about the wear layer. A 14 mm board can carry 2.5 mm or 4 mm of oak. Always ask for the wear layer specifically.

What each thickness buys you

A sanding removes roughly 0.5 to 1 mm and gives the floor another twenty years of service. That is the arithmetic behind the table.

Why you cannot sand to the last millimetre

You need to keep about 1.5 mm above the tongue and the substrate. Go below and the sander exposes the glue line or the plywood underneath, and the board is finished. That is why a 2.5 mm layer allows one sanding and not two.

How to choose without overpaying

  • Rental property, or a home you will sell within ten years — 2.5 mm is enough. Paying for 6 mm you will never use is money spent for the next owner.
  • Family home, long term — 3 mm and above. This is the sensible middle ground for most people.
  • A floor you intend to keep for life — 4 to 6 mm. The extra cost is real, but so is the extra lifespan.
  • Commercial premises — 3 mm minimum, with a factory finish.

The trade-off nobody mentions

A thicker wear layer is not free of downsides. More noble timber on top means the board behaves slightly more like solid wood: it moves a little more with humidity. On underfloor heating, a 6 mm layer on a wide board is less forgiving than a 2.5 mm one.

So the answer is not “always thicker”. It is “thick enough for how long you intend to keep the floor”.

One thing that matters just as much

A floor rarely dies because the wood ran out. It usually dies because the finish gave up and nobody renovated it in time. A well-maintained 2.5 mm floor outlives a neglected 6 mm one.
